Trying Omni Outliner

Markdown in Blogsy

I downloaded a copy of Omni Outliner and it looks quite good. The facilities that it offers are wide-ranging, but there are one of two things missing that I would like to see such as markdown export. As you would expect it does all the basic things well, such as being able to move topics within the document and also indenting of items. I have found that if I want to export to markdown then the best thing to do is to export as OPML and then open the file up in iThoughts X and then do the export from there. Despite the fact that they application is so well featured I think that a lot of of it is for the fiddling about with a look of Outline. All I really want from an outline application is to be able to organise the main topics and subtopics easily so that I can export is ready for filling in the actual text of the finished product. In that case I can easily say that I am not likely to spend the money on Omni Outliner even though is top notch. My money is better spent on using a less-expensive Outliner which does all that I needed to do.

Moving the outline on in the workflow

I was easily able to import an OPML file from iThoughts X and do some at outlining with it. The next part of the process for me is to export it out and put it into Scrivener. I quite like the importing of markdown files into Scrivener, but I can also use OPML to get the text into my writing application. For me, the outlining part of the process is a small and simple task that doesn't require a lot of time and effort spent on it. Just so long as the application has an easy way of using keyboard shortcuts or drag-and-drop to move items up and down in the order and also to be able to indent and outdent to different levels, then what else do I need? There has been a lot of effort in designing Omni Outliner so that you have themes which deal with the look of the Outline and I think to a certain extent this misses the point of what outlining is all about. What you want to do is to get in there and convert a set of random thoughts from the mind map and sorting it out so that you can start doing the actual writing of the topics within the article. The applications for the Mac, Tree and Scribe are both sufficient for this task and well worth checking out to see which one you prefer.
