Just gone EVIL with a Sony NEX 6 as I got fed up carrying around the huge 600D Canon. Loving the little camera so far. Only had it a week or so and it is very capable. It would have been great to get the new Sony A7, but my funds wouldn’t run to that. Funds dropped also due to my buying a second NEX-6 to give to my wife so that we can have a camera each and participate together with the photography. I like to be inclusive and share my passion for photography and she does like taking photos.

The Sony has better software in the camera and the only thing not so good is the lake of microphone input. I can live with that though. I was tempted to go for the NEX-7 to counter the lack of mic input , but the NEX-6 is a newer model of camera and was cheaper while offering better video shooting. The NEX 7 was reported to overheat when shooting video.

The NEX6 has apps that can be added for a small amount of money to extend what it can do. I think it is a bit of a cheek that the apps are being sold by Sony and they already have taken the money for the camera. If it was third party developers then OK. I got one for bracketing and it was £4 and there is one for doing time-lapse which I shall get soon. Really enjoying the camera and taking loads of photos as I learn how to set it up and use the menus. Seems complicated at first, but not so difficult to get into the swing of it.

I have a Canon 600D Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Cameraand I have a couple of Nikon SB25 strobe lights. The lenses I have are old and need to be replaced. I am using a 28 – 80 Canon EF lens and I expect to buy a ‘Nifty Fifty’ lens soon. My son has a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
that he is willing to let me have for a good price. Except the little sod sold it to someone else.

I have a good tripod to use but some day I could do with getting something like a Manfrotto with a fancy fluid head on it. I have a Gorilla Pod tripod which is vey useful and holds the Canon Vixia video camera just perfect. Not sure how it will do with the heavier DSLR on it.

In my studio I have a softbox and some LED lights to light up a green screen and a battery operated small video light which is designed for the top of a camera. I put it on light stands I have. Could really do with a a couple more of the LED lights for use in the studio.

I have a couple of the studio umbrellas to use alongside the softbox.

Buying Decisions

I wanted the Panasonic GH2 but got the Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera
as the price was better for the 600D. I can see that in a year or so there will be an upgrade to the GH2 and it will be very tempting. I was sorely tempted by the GH2 as it was. It does do video better than the Canon despite having a smaller sensor. The EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) type of camera is the future and maybe I could afford the Sony NEX-7 in a while. The EVIL cameras are lighter and smaller, great for the guerrilla style film making and just need to have bigger sensors to be on par with the present day DSLR cameras.
